You Can't Manage It If You Can't Measure It
I don't recall who said that - but man is it true! I have a "sometimes client" who spends several hundred dollars every month in ads they run in trade publications, yet they truely have no "real" idea of whats working and not. I try to help them out and convince them that they are doing 1 of two things; They are either wasting money they shouldn't be spending, or hording money they should be spending!
In all honesty - it's probably a bit of both. They are just one example of this syndrome that I call "The Statistical Stumble".
See the "Statistical Stumble" is when people aren't fully tracking what their advertising is doing - there are a number of reasons why people do this; the most common is that it's too hard to keep track.
